Honoring Dr. King isn't just about honoring a man. It's about honoring the basic truths he and millions of Americans so valiantly stood for. And that we stand for today.
I reread the Letter From A Birmingham Jail as well as the statement from Clergymen that prompted it. Sadly, notice that all types of religious leaders were involved in this ill-founded statement. As Dr. King notes, "Who is their God?" That question could be asked of many today.
Although Dr. King's letter was written as a defense of the civil rights movement, the words live today as a foundation of reasoning for all who seek social justice of any kind.
If you do one thing today to honor Dr. King - read the entire letter and the statement that prompted it.
